Geothermal Heating and Cooling Projects by Hoffmann Brothers
PROJECT 1
Residential Geothermal Installation
Clayton, MO
Geothermal systems can be installed in the smallest of yards. In 2009 we installed a geothermal system in Clayton, MO on Wydown. The residence had a very small front yard and no back yard. We needed to install a 6-ton loop field. Hoffmann Brothers has a small drill rig mounted on a bobcat. This rig can get into tight spaces and under trees that the larger Geothermal drilling rigs cannot reach. We cut a 2’ wide trench down the driveway and installed five 200’ geo wells starting at the street and ending next to the home. We filled the trench with rock and covered the top with concrete. This system was a little unusual because the existing house boiler was used as the backup heat. This geothermal system shows the flexibility and ingenuity of Hoffmann Brothers Engineering department.
PROJECT 2
Residential Geothermal Heating, Cooling and Pool Heater
Ladue, MO
Hoffmann Brothers completed a 15-ton geothermal heating and air conditioning system for a $1,000,000 indoor swimming pool addition in Ladue using Geocomfort equipment in 2008. The addition included a kitchen, family room, indoor pool, squash court, and workout room. The domestic hot water, swimming pool water, pool dehumidification, pool deck floor heat, and HVAC system were all powered by geothermal. This allows for a 30% tax credit that is not available with conventional water heating and HVAC equipment. A 6-ton water to water geothermal system heats the domestic hot water and stores it in one 80-gallon storage tanks. The house has a hot water circulating line to keep the lines hot at all times. A heat pump and heat exchanger from this system is used to heat the pool. In the event the owners take lots of showers and are heating the pool at the same time it not possible to run out of hot water because the system is backed up by a tankless water heater. Hoffmann Brothers Heating and Air Conditioning has two mechanical engineers on staff to design these custom heating and cooling systems. The cost of this geothermal system was approximately $160,000 and the owner received a $48,000 tax credit resulting in a net cost of $112,000. This high efficiency heating and cooling system will reduce energy costs by $7,000 per year.
This home also includes the latest indoor air quality products. We used HC-10 air cleaners, Lennox UV lights, dehumidification controls, resulting in the best indoor air quality.
PROJECT 3
Residential Geothermal Heat Pump and Hot Water System
Town & Country, MO
Hoffmann Brothers recently completed a 27-ton geothermal heating and Air conditioning system for a home in Town and Country using Geocomfort equipment. The home is a 10,000 sq. ft. $4,500,000 home. The domestic hot water, swimming pool, and HVAC system were all powered by geothermal. A 6-ton water to water geothermal unit heated the domestic hot water and stores it in two 80-gallon storage tanks. The house has a hot water circulating line to keep the lines hot at all times. A pump and heat exchanger from this system is used to heat the pool. In the event the owners take lots of showers and are heating the pool at the same time it is not possible to run out of hot water because the system is backed up by a 98% efficient tankless water heater. Hoffmann Brothers Heating and Air Conditioning has two mechanical engineers on staff to design these custom heating and cooling systems. The cost of this Geothermal system was approximately $220,000 and the owner received a $66,000 tax credit resulting in a net cost of $154,000. This system will reduce energy costs by $10,000 per year.
This home also includes the latest indoor air quality products. We used Lennox Pure Air air cleaners, Lennox UV lights, Lennox HEPA bypass filters, dehumidification controls, Lennox humidifiers, resulting in the best indoor air quality.
