Horizontal Heating and Cooling Loop
Horizontal Loops for Geothermal Heat Pumps Systems
One of the types of loop systems that Hoffmann Brothers Heating & Air Conditioning installs when putting in a Geothermal Heat Pump is the Horizontal Loop. Horizontal loops are most often used for homes or buildings that are being newly constructed. Horizontal loops require much more surface area than vertical loops and are therefore used less frequently for large projects. The ground conditions for the horizontal loops are best when there is no hard rock. Horizontal loops are the most economical option for smaller projects with plenty of available land space.
Hoffmann Brothers is the premier St. Louis, Missouri Geothermal Heating and Cooling Contractor. Contact us and learn about the installation of Horizontal Geothermal Loops!

Piping for Horizontal Geothermal Energy Loop Installation
A horizontal closed loop field has pipes that run horizontally in the ground. A long horizontal trench that is deeper then the frost line is dug. Then U-shaped, is the more traditional method for a horizontal loop system. But there is also the slinky coil closed loop system that is a type of horizontal loop where the pipes overlay each other. The slinky loop is just like a slinky, rather than using straight pipe the coils are round, and used when there is not adequate room for a true horizontal system.
For a better understanding of horizontal geothermal loops, please see the below depiction of a horizontal geothermal loop system.

For the horizontal loop of a Geothermal Heat Pump system, the land needs to be big enough for the trenches do be dug. Excavation equipment digs trenches from 6-8 feet deep and range from 100-300 feet long, depending on the design.  The horizontal system uses a number of trenches. The piping can be configured in the trenches in several ways:
  • A single pipe
  • Multiple pipes in a narrow trench
  • Multiple pipes in a wider trench
One of the advantages of a horizontal loop system is being able to lay the trenches according to the size of the lot. Parallel piping is then laid in a series in these trenches allowing fluid to run through the pipe.
